Review: Logitech Keyboard K830

After a week on holiday - which I shall blog about soon - it's time to play catch up, and I have many many posts lined up for you wonderful lot; my first being a review! I was pleasantly surprised when I was asked to review some lovely Logitech products, first off because I was shocked that my little blog was contacted by such a well known company, and secondly because (but something that Logitech obviously doesn't know about me) I'm absolutely rubbish with technology.

Despite this hurdle, I got on surprisingly well with the products that I was sent, the K830 Illuminated Living-Room Keyboard being one of them. Firstly, I was impressed with the packaging. I always get drawn in by the packaging of products, as I believe they're extremely important, it's the first thing you see and this packaging is simple, and sturdy. Inside the K830 sat snuggly, along with USB cables, a small unifying receiver, which is a USB that plugs into the device you're linking the keyboard to, and of course the important bits of paper. Now I'm not one for set up guides, it's probably why everything I own frustrates me so much, but I considered the product that sat in front of me and I decided to have a flick through. But upon seeing the unifying receiver, it took me all of about 2 minutes to set up the K830 in my front room with my brother's PS3 - it was so simple, I didn't even need the guide. A simple click of the on switch at the back of the keyboard after inserting the USB into one of the PS3 ports allowed me to be sat with my feet up watching Game of Thrones in no time after scrolling around smoothly through the PS3 menu with the K830 mouse. As soon as it was plugged in I felt like a child, absolutely amazed by how easy it was to use, and as technology amazes me much more than it does many, I sat on the edge of my sofa going 'wow!', 'ooooh' and 'omg this is SO cool' - if only I weren't home alone at the time, though when my family returned I gathered them around the K830 and showed off it's power, and fortunately for me, they were as amazed as I was.

I've had wireless keyboards in the past, and none have ever been so sleek and lightweight. It's so aesthetically pleasing considering it's a keyboard, I think I'm a bit enamoured with this product. The keys are comfortable to use and quiet, and the mouse isn't sensitive enough to have you flying all over the screen. Scrolling around is easy, and a simple tap on the touch pad also performs a click - this is genuinely something I look for in a keyboard (is that silly?) - it makes pausing Game of Thrones only a tap away - not that I'd pause it of course, a GoT marathon is the only way to go.

Of course, I had to try it out on Netflix too. So still linked up to the PS3, I found having the keyboard made signing in so much easier - as it would - and I know this would work SO well in my student house. We all watch Netflix and films downstairs a lot, so someone's always sat on the floor scrolling through the laptop (a longer HDMI cable would also be handy, but the K830 is so much prettier), and it's a case of getting up when you want to pause it, or forgetting to put it full screen and having to move - we're students after all so moving isn't really something we enjoy when we're snuggled down to watch Netflix. This keyboard takes away all that effort. Now the mouse on the K380 doesn't actually work on Netflix for some reason, but that's no bother as you've got the rest of the keyboard that makes it ever so simple to work your way around.

Next up, getting it connected to the PC. It was, once again, extremely simple and easy. It all installed itself, and I was away in less than a minute. It's handy to be able to do everything with the keyboard, and in darkness to have it all lit up - something that would also be useful whilst settled down to watch Netflix. Like many other keyboards the top 'F' buttons perform everything you need them to, from pausing and playing music, adjusting the level of brightness on the keyboard, controlling the volume, maximising and minimising the windows, and also switching from the computer to the TV. However, I would say whilst at the desktop the keyboard feels a little more snug, whilst I as a small person quite enjoy the size, I can imagine to others it may feel a little on the small size. My dad for instance preferred not to use the mouse, and instead kept his own all connected, whilst still using the rest of the keyboard.

The handy thing about this keyboard is that you don't have to worry about batteries, other than the rechargeable one within it. The guide says that 3 hours of charge provides 10 days of use and I'd probably say this seems about right. I haven't been using the keyboard on a day to day basis, so I can't say exactly, but it hasn't needed a charge in the two weeks I've had it!

Overall, I was pretty impressed with this keyboard if you hadn't guessed! The K830 retails at £89.99, which isn't the cheapest around, but it's a solid keyboard, that would definitely keep you going for a long time. I think there's a lot more to this keyboard that I didn't get the chance to explore, it's definitely worth a look. I really enjoyed reviewing this product, and I know it'd work really well in a student house, or in the family living room (and it's definitely child friendly, being very simple to use) - after all that's what it's designed for!
