Walking Down a Dead End

Now, I've been a big fan of The Walking Dead since my friend introduced me to it and we watched the whole of the first season in one night, staying up to the early hours just to see how Rick and the gang got on in the zombie ridden world. But now, with the other half of season 4 on the go I'm starting to wonder how many more of those tense situations where that cast member *cough* Carl *cough* still doesn't die that I can take.

I hate to make a dig at the show, because it's absolutely brilliant, and I've watched each series countless numbers of times, but The Walking Dead has certainly made me realise why the whole zombie apocalypse story line works so much better in films in the long run.

First and foremost, but not on all occasions, you don't give a crap about the characters in zombie films, you simply want to be entertained for an hour and a half. But with The Walking Dead, it's impossible not to shed a little tear when a character you've come to love over the years gets killed in a zombie attack or by some murderous and greedy human being who has lost all sense of morality. And honestly, who's going to watch The Walking Dead if they kill Daryl?

Then of course, there's the fact that TWD has exhausted most of the possible conclusive solutions to a zombie apocalypse, and also exhausted how the group aren't going to achieve that heaven sent ending some films are graced with. There isn't a World War Z cure out there for them, because they made sure of that in season 1. There's probably another safe haven, but there's more than likely someone, alive or dead, who will take it from them. In the case of films, they can conclude with such an ending where the world is still at war with the dead, and you're either left anticipating a sequel or satisfied that the characters that you haven't really got attached to, are going to die.

So, how is this, in my eyes, making TWD tedious to watch? Well because I can't see a solution. The current situation the gang are in sends them straight back to square one. They're all separated, you're all left wondering who's going to survive the next episode (more than likely everyone will, TWD hasn't got that cut throat Game of Thrones thing going on). And having the group back to where they were 3 seasons ago, but this time more dispersed than ever, means the story line can only go in circles.

How many times have the group met someone they can't trust? Or been split up? Or found a safe haven that was destroyed by either a jealous and disturbed man or well...a dead hungry man?

You want things to go right for them, and you want most of the characters to survive (soz Carl, but it's definitely personal). But what comes after survival? TWD is only going to get more tedious to watch in my opinion, because the group either has to find help (which there evidently is none of) or be killed off. And there's no comedic heroes like Columbus and Tallahassee to save the day, or a famous persons house to hide away in.

If only they could just go to the Winchester and wait for all this to blow over, aye?

What are your thoughts on the latest season of TWD - am I wrong to think the group have run out of happy endings?
